The Saw Mill Ride Complex
"A Cut Above the Rest"

Take an awesome trip back in time as you wander through a maze of pulleys, conveyor belts, levers and switches in this massive, converted sawmill. It's a Rube Goldberg drawing come to life, where cogs and gears whir in perpetual motion around a vast array of unique, fun and exciting attractions. From the crazy twists and turns of the wild mouse to the one-of-a-kind climbing wall, the Saw Mill Ride Complex is guaranteed to appeal to the entire family.

Guest Experience

Approaching the attraction, you can hardly believe your eyes! This massive, industrial building seems to be a survivor of an earlier age...perhaps the late 19th Century, when timber harvesting was the major occupation here in the Smokey Mountains. A pretty, pastoral scene surrounds the structure. A waterfall - perhaps the original power source for the mill - tumbles majestically into a clear stream that flows past the building and under a rustic wooden bridge. Lush evergreens and swaying deciduous trees add a woodsy smell that mixes with the aroma of fresh sawdust.

Gigantic letters hanging over the front door proclaim "SAWMILL," but clearly, processing wood hasn't been the main occupation of this impressive structure for quite some time. Roller coaster tracks surround the tin-roofed wooden Saw Mill. A sign above the closer track proclaims "Spin Cycle." Little cars twist and swerve, careening madly around hairpin turns, while their riders grin with joy. On the other side of the building, children giggle hysterically on a small roller coaster dubbed "The Log Roll." The speedy little train screeches around curves and hops over a pond crammed with floating lumber, as the screams of its occupants rise and fall with the undulations of the track.

The din of Victorian machinery wafts up from the Sawmill...a symphony of sawing, squeaking and clanking. Intrigued, you venture closer to the gaping doorway, eager to discover the source of the cacophony, but before you go inside, an enormous pyramid of stacked logs captures your attention. A colossal pile of raw lumber looms before you, each log four feet in diameter, stretching up three stories tall. It seems impossibly imposing, until you realize that small children are crawling on it! Sure, the little tykes are wearing climbing harnesses, but just looking up at the summit of this hulking wall of wood gives you a nosebleed!

As you enter the building, the intense mechanical activity takes you completely by surprise. Pulleys, conveyor belts, cogs and gears whir and clatter on both sides of the queue line. The entire building is like an ingenious industrial kinetic sculpture, designed so form follows function to produce a primitive, rustic beauty. Long, uncut logs swing on massive chains, on their way to the sawing room. Processed lumber emerges from the same area, rolling by on a weathered conveyor belt, headed for the shipping dock.

Across the gigantic room, you hear squeals of delight and see a giant runaway saw blade spinning wildly, seemingly out of control. This ride, called the Buzzsaw, rocks its occupants back and forth in a wide arc, while rotating them rapidly around and around like a mill saw that has broken free of its moorings. A metallic clatter draws your gaze upward and you suddenly realize that the Spin Cycle track weaves through the building, threading its way through a gauntlet of antique industrial contraptions. Every close call and near miss elicits cries of delicious terror from the wild mouse riders.

On the other side of the Mill, kids of all ages are gathered around a Family Fun Center, playing classic midway games like "Ring Toss," and "Wack-a-Mole." You have to look twice at what's happening over in the back corner...it seems to be a scene from a campy melodrama. A Victorian costumed "damsel in distress" lies tied up on a saw table, as the spinning, water-spitting blade threatens to cut her in two. Nearby, a mustachioed "villain" in a black tophat and cape fends off a dashing "hero" who is apparently trying to rescue the unfortunate lady. A series of flashes tips you off that it's a very clever, costumed photo opportunity...a great way to create a lasting memory of your experience at the Saw Mill Ride Complex.
